Smith's Olde Bar, August 16th

One thing I find so fascinating about Taylor Hicks is his ability to play "cheesy" brilliantly then hop in a car and transform into Serious Music Man. From all accounts, he knocked everyone's socks off on both stages last night.

I've said it before: he's an enigma, wrapped in a mystery, deep-fried in a puzzle and wrapped up tidily with a leather band that no one will ever know the meaning of. And I would guess he loves it that way. But who the hell knows?

  1. Yep agree Caryl. But Who The Hell Knows? Kinda think his dad knows a bit more being an invested parent. Friends, buddies and some girlfriends could give some input. But Taylor went on AI, won, wrote a book, does interviews and gigs and reveals what he wishes. rosie

  2. But I can't figure the dude out. Is he deep? Is he goofy? I know, he's both. But it's still a conundrum.

  3. Goofy, No Way. Way, way more deep. However, given he was a poor musician, pre AI, at age 28, I would have passed him up for sure. I was into degrees and suits. I would have thought him a looser and dreamer and in no way long term relationship. Even now he seems way more into music, career and thus himself to be someone's Mr. right Between you and me, he should IMO watch out for the acholol given his genes. Can't believe I wrote that. rosie

  4. Caryl,
I really disagree with your comments regarding Taylor Hicks. Oh my. Really, who cares what makes him who he is? Do I? Not in the least. I do know he's a Southerner. He's just enjoying his life and career right now and why the hell should he not? He's paid his dues. It simply amazes me that people continue to try to 'figure Taylor out, WHAT for? LMAO - I just enjoy his talent and this fabulous man and his enormous energy on stage. He's different and that makes him all that more wonderfuly special. I adore the guy, no matter what he decides to do, I'm ready. If there are those who are not ready for his ride, then get off. That pretty much covers it. I was there last night, totally om fire, he was blazing hot. What a show, he was simply amazing, both at Smiths and in Grease.

To the comment about "Taylor drinking" from one of the posters here? Taylor has good sense, he can decide what he wants to do. He's not a child. LOL. I don't think that type of comment is appropriate, I find it annoying. it shouldn't be directed at a mature man like Taylor. Its his life, not yours. Just sayin. :)

  5. Anon, That comment was from me, Rosie. To me it was an appropriate thing to mention to Caryl on her blog and topic. No way would I say such a thing to Taylor. Who in the hell, as in casual fan would say such a thing to Taylor? I mentioned a thought and a passing one, an opinion if you will, albeit loosly based on science, to another fan. Anon, I kinda, sorta feel comphy, friendly and familiar with Caryl. But most of all I got something off my chest and it felt good.

  6. It seems that Taylor's private life is still one that people would like to diasect and control. I think that he is doing just fine and it certainly isn't up to any of us as to what he does in his life. His music? That's something that is worth talking about. He always was a great musician. American Idol did not create his talent. Having heard his old CDs and realizing that it was a shame that he was not discovered at that time of his life. Politics has always played into who gets the contract and the big gigs. That's the music biz and it will continue to be that way. Talent like Taylor's talent, is the kind that you are born with, that is rare and a gift.

  7. I get the warm fuzzies when he tags Tupelo Honey...my favorite Van song. As for the rest of this topic...I'll keep my opinions to myself, he is indeed a complicated and deep soul and I will forever be a fan.

  8. I'm getting the feeling my post was misunderstood. I think it's IMPRESSIVE that Taylor can handle both kinds of entertainment so well. I don't actually spend any time trying to figure him out. It was a feeble attempt at humor.

I think Rosie's comment was fine. She's not attacking Taylor or spreading rumors, which I wouldn't support.

  9. Caryl-

I enjoyed your description of Taylor. For the poster that doesn't feel the need to know "who he is" why do you feel the need to tell people that?

Exactly how does it affect anyone's life if someone decides to be a fan that does enjoy a little bit of analyzing? It doesn't mean people are controlling him. How can you control someone you don't even know?

The alcohol thing is no secret. But, he's a grown man. Again, talking about it isn't the end of the world.

Nobody is denying his God given talent. None of us would be here if we didn't enjoy him. But, the nit picking amongst the fans is driving his online fanbase away in droves.

Just live and let live. As Anon up there said.

" If there are those who are not ready for his ride, then get off"

Well, if a blog entry doesn't suit you.. don't comment. Once the entitlement and elitism of telling Taylor fans how to be fans, and what people deem appropriate vs. inappropriate stops, SP will be a kinder gentler place to live.

  10. Caryl, your post was fine but there will always be some who misunderstand. It would be real boring if online fans only talked about his music. No one got my joke of "Between you and me", hehe there is no such thing in online Tayland. I ruffled a few feathers in the past, by just mentioning it appeared his hair was thining and chin lipo could do wonders. Last night a few on the BB said he drank quite a few potent drinks, but watching the vids today he looks fine to me. While I saw nothing wrong with my opinion that with achololism in his family he needs to be viligent, I know I sent some SP over the edge. Bad Fan rosie

  11. Taylor Hicks is MANY things to me. When he was here in CA last March, I met him at the Grease stage door in San Diego (he actually arrives before intermission) and gave him a CD I made called "Taylor is the "Man" ".

There were 19 songs on the disc (intentional) that included: "Sharp Dressed Man" by ZZ Top, "Rubberband Man" by The Spinners, "A Well Respected Man" by The Kinks, "Real Good Man" by Tim McGraw (a touch of Country), "Gypsy Man" by War (11 plus minutes w/ harp), "Wild Man" by The J. Geils Band, "Ice Cream Man" by Van Halen (obviously), "Love Man" by Otis Redding, Mr. Tambourine Man" by The Byrds, "Monkey Man" by The Rolling Stones, "My Man" by The Eagles, "Handy Man" by James Taylor, "Simple Man" by Bad Company, Back Door Man" by The Doors, "Ramblin' Man" by The Allman Brothers, "Gamblin' Man" by Eddie Money, "Ramblin Gamblin Man" by Bob Seger, and "Mystery Man" by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. (A great mix by the way that I listen to on my iPod periodically).

To me, these songs make up the various facets of Taylor. I do believe that he is a "Mystery Man" but that's not a bad thing. I like it that way. I personally think it makes him all the more interesting. I mean look at us all still curious and "wow"ed by his every move AND his amazing talent. I will continue to follow his career and listening to his past, present, and future music/videos/media. I'm really looking forward to buying WATW in November (fingers crossed), even though I've seen it more times than I can count. Bottom line:Taylor's fun and he's SO worth it!! Long Live Taylor Hicks!!! Fan For Life! (duh!)

  12. I just realized I left out "I'm A Man" by Chicago which was the first track on the disc. Great jam, great song, "all" Taylor!
